Mental Illness And…… India

Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Here are some really cool facts about mental health and India that no one told you about.

1. 1:1,00,000

Imagine having only one doctor for every one lakh citizen of this country! Oh, wait. That is exactly the case. We only have one psychologist for every one lakh people. But why would we need any more of mental hospital doctors? We don’t have that many dumb, mental, crazy, stupid, psychopaths here. Only the before mentioned people need these doctors.

2. Only 200 million are depressed

According to a study conducted in 2015 by the WHO (World Health Organisation), it is said that 1 in every 5 Indians suffer depression so only almost 200 million Indians suffer from depression. At least the rest of the population is safe. Can’t figure out why these 200 million still struggle to wake up early in the mornings and get to work, school and college on time and be productive with their time? How hard can it be to wake up, I do it every day. They themselves invited these problems into their lives. What can we do?

3. Let’s work harder on the naming and shaming

Want to hear about an even more amazing fact? Only 10 – 12% of these people seek help. Just great, isn’t it? We all know only pagal/ crazy people go to see psychologist and psychiatrist. I can’t imagine what we all would do if this country became a more tolerant, peaceful and self-love propagating land. What would we gossip about? Who would be randomly trash talk about?

4. A Divine Curse

Why do people go crazy? Obviously, it is because God is angry at them. Mental illness is not some ordinary curse, it’s a divine curse. That’s what some really old Vedic book said. I am pretty sure something books written by some really old self-proclaimed saint is righter than the studies and research done by scholars and professionals.

5. Mental Illness? What’s that?

Just like Trump denies the existence of climate change, most of the Indians deny the existence of mental illness. According to the very knowledgeable Indian elder’s committee, the cure for any mental illness is waking up early in the morning, working out every single day and eating home-cooked food. Why do we need a psychologist or even a psychiatrist for something that does not exist?

Monsters do exist! They exist in the form of ignorance, denial and victim shaming. This World Mental Health day lets vow to stand by and support the people suffering from any mental ailments. Let us find the strength to take a step towards visiting a mental health clinic without the weight of being seen and outcasted by society for seeking help.
